The Haunt Index

America's Most Haunted States

Raw counts always crown the big states. So we did the honest math — 1,385 haunts across 51 states, ranked by what actually matters. Switch the metric and watch the map rewrite itself.

Haunts per 10,000 residents — the great equalizer. Small states stop hiding behind big ones.

The Superlatives

How we count

Haunt counts come from the Halloween Universe directory — a growing, curated map of real haunted attractions, not a complete census of every haunt in the country. It excludes listings we couldn't verify to an accurate location.

Per-capita figures use U.S. Census Bureau population estimates (public domain). To keep the rankings honest, per-capita and scare-based metrics only include states with at least five haunts — so a single attraction can't crown a tiny state on a fluke.

The numbers update as the directory grows and as owners claim and refine their listings. Spotted a haunt we're missing? Submit it here.
