The premise
The story of British serial killer John Christie, who committed most or all of his crimes in the titular terraced house, and the miscarriage of justice involving Timothy Evans.
Horror Vault's take
Behind the unremarkable façade of a postwar London terrace house, a soft-spoken man pursues a campaign of predatory evil that will have devastating consequences for those unlucky enough to cross his threshold. Based on one of Britain's most chilling true-crime cases, the film draws its horror not from the supernatural but from the mundane — a neighbour, a landlord, a seemingly helpful stranger. Richard Attenborough delivers a performance of deeply unsettling restraint, while John Hurt portrays the tragic vulnerability of a man utterly out of his depth. Together they make this a portrait of how ordinary settings and ordinary people can conceal the most monstrous of realities.
