20 Million Miles to Earth1957
“Space nightmares!”
Directed by Nathan Juran
The premise
When the first manned flight to Venus returns to Earth, the rocket crash-lands in the Mediterranean near a small Italian fishing village. The locals manage to save one of the astronauts Colonel Calder, the mission commander. A young boy also recovers what turns out to be a specimen of an alien creature. Growing at a fantastic rate, it manages to escape and eventually threatens the city of Rome.
Horror Vault's take
Mankind's first voyage to Venus ends in catastrophe when the returning rocket plunges into the Mediterranean off the coast of Sicily, bringing back more than its crew bargained for. A mysterious specimen recovered by a local boy begins to grow at an alarming rate, and soon the creature — far from its home world — is loose and desperate in an unfamiliar land. As Italian authorities and the military scramble to contain the escalating threat, the chase leads all the way to the ancient streets of Rome. Ray Harryhausen's landmark stop-motion artistry makes every frame of this creature feature a visual achievement.
