The premise
A supermarket as both a microcosm of Japanese society and the setting for a socially critical horror film. Expressionless faces and a supervisor who demands zombie-like friendliness. Only the young Sakai doesn’t stop hoping.
Horror Vault's take
In the fluorescent-lit aisles of a Japanese convenience store, the daily grind has a way of hollowing people out — until the staff are barely distinguishable from the undead. Management demands a performance of cheerful compliance so relentless it crosses into something genuinely horrifying. Young Sakai clocks in each shift as one of the few souls still flickering with genuine human feeling, quietly at odds with a workplace culture that seems designed to extinguish it. AnyMart uses the mundane setting of retail work to deliver something far more unsettling than your average monster movie.
