The premise
In the 1970s, a British sound technician is brought to Italy to work on the sound effects for a gruesome horror film. His nightmarish task slowly takes over his psyche, driving him to confront his own past.

A meticulous British sound engineer arrives at a Roman studio in the 1970s to work on an Italian horror production, only to find the assignment far more disturbing than anything he bargained for. Surrounded by the visceral craft of manufacturing screams, squelches, and dread from everyday objects, the boundary between the film-within-a-film and his own waking life begins to erode. Director Peter Strickland constructs a hypnotic love letter to giallo cinema that is less about gore and more about the slow collapse of a fragile mind. The studio itself becomes a pressure cooker, trapping its protagonist in a loop of sound, memory, and creeping unreality.
