The premise

Blackmailing a young couple to assist with his horrific experiments the Baron, desperate for vital medical data, abducts a man from an insane asylum. On route the abductee dies and the Baron and his assistant transplant his brain into a corpse. The creature is tormented by a trapped soul in an alien shell and, after a visit to his wife who violently rejects his monstrous form, the creature wreaks his revenge on the perpetrator of his misery: Baron Frankenstein.

Horror Vault's take

Peter Cushing delivers one of his most coldly menacing performances as Baron Frankenstein, a man who will stop at nothing — blackmail, grave robbery, or worse — to pursue his ghastly experiments. When his latest scheme forces a terrified young couple into his web of crime, events spiral toward a confrontation with consequences none of them can control. This entry in Hammer's Frankenstein series leans into the Baron's villainy more unflinchingly than ever, making him as much monster as the creature he creates. Dark, morally complex, and driven by genuine pathos, it stands among the most mature films in the cycle.
