Gorgo1961
“Like nothing you've ever seen before!”
Directed by Eugène Lourié
The premise
When an underwater volcanic eruption tears up the sea bed off the coast of Ireland, two treasure hunters make the discovery of a lifetime when they encounter a gigantic prehistoric monster that’s been unleashed from the earth’s crust. After capturing the beast, the pair transport the creature down to London where it’s given the name of “Gorgo” and put on display to an avid public. Little do they realize that Gorgo is just an infant, and that his exponentially larger mother is about to emerge from the depths to avenge the capture of her offspring.
Horror Vault's take
Off the storm-battered coast of Ireland, two opportunistic salvagers stumble upon something far more ancient and terrifying than sunken gold — a colossal prehistoric creature dredged up by volcanic upheaval. Sensing profit over peril, they haul their monstrous prize to the heart of London and put it on display for a sensation-hungry crowd. What the city doesn't know is that the creature they're gawking at is only the beginning, and the ocean holds something far, far larger with a very personal reason to come ashore. Gorgo delivers city-levelling spectacle wrapped around a surprisingly primal emotional core.
