Ichi the Killer2001
“Love really hurts.”
Directed by Takashi Miike
🏆 6 wins & 4 nominations total
The premise
As sadomasochistic yakuza enforcer Kakihara searches for his missing boss he comes across Ichi, a repressed and psychotic killer who may be able to inflict levels of pain that Kakihara has only dreamed of.
Horror Vault's take
In the neon-soaked backstreets of Tokyo's Kabukicho district, a flamboyantly sadistic yakuza enforcer tears through the criminal underworld hunting for his vanished boss — and the trail leads him toward a deeply damaged, near-mythic killer. Director Takashi Miike orchestrates a collision between two extremes of violence: one who craves suffering and one who delivers it without fully understanding why. Based on the cult manga, the film revels in extreme excess while probing the twisted psychology beneath every act of brutality. It's a confrontational, anarchic fever dream that pushes the boundaries of what genre cinema dares to show.
