The premise

MPD Psycho (full title: Multiple Personality Detective Psycho – Kazuhiko Amamiya Returns) is a six-part Japanese surrealist horror miniseries directed by Takashi Miike, based on Eiji Ōtsuka's manga series of the same name. Homicide detective Yosuke Kobayashi saw his wife killed by serial killer Shinji Nishizono. From the shock of the incident, he suffers from multiple personality disorder and becomes Kazuhiko Amamiya. Soon after, he goes on the hunt for revenge.

Horror Vault's take

From provocateur director Takashi Miike comes this six-part Japanese surrealist horror miniseries that plunges deep into the shattered psyche of a homicide detective undone by unimaginable personal tragedy. When Kazuhiko Amamiya — one of several identities fighting for control of the same body — takes up the hunt for a monstrous serial killer, the line between investigator and monster grows dangerously blurred. Adapted from Eiji Ōtsuka's manga, the series combines lurid crime procedural with hallucinatory imagery and visceral body horror that pushes well past conventional genre boundaries. Viewers should brace themselves: this is Miike operating at his most uncompromising.
