The premise

A young journalist journeys to Iceland to find her missing fiancé only to encounter a mythical creature who longs to die.

Horror Vault's take

When a young journalist travels to the remote Icelandic wilderness to investigate her fiancé's disappearance, she comes face to face with a being that defies all rational explanation. Far from a straightforward monster tale, the film is a dark fable that lingers on questions of what it truly means to suffer and to endure. Director Hal Hartley uses the creature as a lens through which to examine human cruelty, sensationalism, and the modern media machine. Anchored by an eclectic ensemble cast including Sarah Polley and Helen Mirren, it is a brooding, unconventional horror-fantasy unlike anything else of its era.
