The premise
Beautiful young manicurist Carole suffers from androphobia (the pathological fear of interaction with men). When her sister and roommate, Helen, leaves their London flat to go on an Italian holiday with her married boyfriend, Carole withdraws into her apartment. She begins to experience frightful hallucinations, her fear gradually mutating into madness.
Horror Vault's take
Roman Polanski's landmark psychological horror follows a fragile young Belgian woman living in 1960s London whose grip on reality begins to slip the moment she is left alone in her sister's flat. Shot in stark black and white, the film places the viewer uncomfortably inside a disintegrating mind, rendering hallucinations and waking life nearly indistinguishable. As the outside world — particularly its male inhabitants — presses in, the apartment itself seems to become a living extension of her terror. Few films have depicted the internal architecture of a breakdown with such unrelenting, suffocating precision.
