The premise
When a former actor moves into an apartment building with the intention of commiting suicide, he is saved by a Taoist priest who used to specialize in hunting Chinese hopping vampires: or Jiāngshī. Elsewhere in the building, a woman turns to a specialist in black magic to bring her husband back to life.
Horror Vault's take
Set almost entirely within the decaying corridors of a crumbling Hong Kong housing block, Rigor Mortis weaves together the fates of desperate residents whose private sorrows draw them into contact with forces far beyond the living. A washed-up actor arrives at the building at his lowest point, only to be pulled into a world of restless spirits, dark rituals, and the ancient terror of the jiāngshī — the Chinese hopping vampire. The film pays loving homage to the classic Mr. Vampire-era genre while delivering something far more mournful and visually striking. Equal parts ghost story, black-magic thriller, and character study, it lingers long after the credits roll.
