The premise

An Oxford Medical School graduate takes a position at a mental institution and soon becomes obsessed with a female mental patient, but he has no idea of a recent and horrifying staffing change.

Horror Vault's take

A freshly minted Oxford physician arrives at a remote Victorian asylum hoping to begin a promising career, only to find that Stonehearst operates by rules that defy everything he was trained to believe. As he falls under the spell of a captivating patient, he begins to sense that something is deeply, dangerously wrong with the men who run this place. Adapted from an Edgar Allan Poe short story, the film wraps its psychological unease in sumptuous Gothic atmosphere and a stellar ensemble cast. The further our idealistic doctor digs, the more the line between healer and patient begins to blur.
