The Alligator People1959
“Nerve-shattering terror!”
Directed by Roy Del Ruth
The premise
Under therapeutic hypnosis, a seemingly well-adjusted young woman tells a fantastic story, verified by lie detector, of her forgotten marriage to a man who disappeared on the day of their honeymoon, and of her search for him which takes her to a lonely mansion in a remote section of swampland tenanted by snakes, alligators, a drunken one-armed lout, a mysterious doctor, and a cold-hearted elderly woman who lives alone in a brooding manse.
Horror Vault's take
A young woman's repressed memories — unlocked under hypnosis — reveal a haunting tale of a vanished husband and a desperate search that leads her deep into Louisiana swampland. What she found there was strange enough to be buried in her own mind. A brooding mansion, a reclusive doctor, and the gator-infested bayou all hold pieces of a terrible secret. This late-50s creature feature blends Gothic atmosphere with mad-science dread in ways that linger well past its B-movie trappings.
