The premise

The wicked Alain plots an elaborate revenge against his younger brother Edmund, leading to a deadly confrontation in his dungeon deathtrap.

Horror Vault's take

Set in the shadowy châteaux of 17th-century France, The Strange Door follows a scheming nobleman whose bitter vendetta against his own kin spirals into something truly sinister. Charles Laughton chews the scenery magnificently as a villain of baroque menace, while Boris Karloff lends the film an air of brooding unease. Secrets lurk behind hidden passages and locked doors, and those who stumble into this estate may find themselves at the mercy of a trap with no obvious way out.
