The premise
An Albanian pilgrim, infected with an unknown disease, is on his way back to Belgrade from the Middle East. When doctors realize that it is a disease that has been considered eradicated, it is already too late - variola vera begins to languish and the hospital is quarantined.
Horror Vault's take
When a pilgrim returning from the Middle East arrives in Belgrade carrying an illness no one expected to see again, Yugoslav doctors face a race against a disease they were unprepared for. Based on a real 1972 smallpox outbreak, the film traps its characters inside a quarantined hospital where the walls close in as the body count rises. Variola Vera is less concerned with monsters than with the creeping horror of biological catastrophe and the cracks it opens in human behavior. Its clinical restraint makes it all the more disturbing.
