A Blade in the Dark1983
“Don't Go Down the Stairs.”
Directed by Lamberto Bava
The premise
Bruno, an up and coming film composer, has been hired to write the score to a new horror movie. After moving into a secluded villa, life begins to imitate art as a vicious killer starts bumping off anyone and everyone who happens to pay him a visit.
Horror Vault's take
A young composer retreats to a remote Italian villa to score a horror film, only to find the grim fiction he's working on bleeding unsettlingly into reality. Visitors begin to disappear one by one, and Bruno finds himself entangled in a deadly mystery he can't simply rewind. Director Lamberto Bava brings a sharp giallo sensibility to this stylish early-80s chiller, building dread through atmosphere and razor-edged tension rather than pure spectacle. Fans of Italian genre cinema will find plenty to savour in its moody villa setting and meta-textual undercurrents.
