When a Japanese high schooler's wish for excitement is grotesquely granted, he and his classmates find themselves trapped in a series of lethal rounds inspired by children's games — overseen by nightmarish creatures that make the stakes horrifyingly real. Directed by Takashi Miike and adapted from a manga, the film hurls its cast through escalating spectacles of invention and carnage with a gleeful, pitch-black energy. Equal parts absurdist comedy and visceral terror, it transforms the familiar imagery of childhood play into something deeply unsettling. Fans of Japanese extreme cinema will find plenty to keep them on edge.
