What starts as a plausible urban nightmare of double-bookings and social anxiety rapidly descends into something far darker lurking beneath the surface. Barbarian earns its scares through relentless dread and a willingness to detonate your expectations just when you think you have it figured out. Few recent horror films have weaponized a sense of place — specifically what lies below it — quite so effectively.
