The premise
In the 17th century, an order of monks in Italy capture and entomb a demon that has possessed a member of their group. 400 years later, school teacher Elizabeth Magrino visits the monastery in order to do some research. What she and the current monks do not realize is that the evil hiding within the catacombs has unwittingly been released.

Centuries ago, a brotherhood of Italian monks took desperate measures to imprison a powerful demonic force beneath their monastery — and their sacrifice was meant to last forever. When a present-day schoolteacher arrives at the historic cloister for academic research, she unknowingly steps into the shadow of something that has waited an extraordinarily long time to be free. Set against the stone corridors and candlelit chambers of a real monastery, Catacombs builds its dread through atmosphere and ancient mystery rather than spectacle. What lurks below may be far older — and far more patient — than anyone above ground realizes.
