The premise

In a mid-19th century Essex country house, a young governess for two children becomes convinced that the house and grounds are haunted by ghosts and that the children are being possessed.

Horror Vault's take

A prim young governess arrives at a grand Victorian country estate to care for two unnervingly perfect children, and soon finds herself haunted by presences she cannot explain or dismiss. As strange visions and the children's disturbing behaviour mount, she begins to question whether the house holds genuine supernatural evil — or whether something darker is unravelling within her own mind. Shot in luminous black and white, this 1961 adaptation of Henry James's 'The Turn of the Screw' is widely regarded as one of cinema's most elegant and genuinely frightening ghost stories, relying entirely on suggestion and psychological tension rather than shock.
