The premise

In 1960s Tokyo, Gonda owns a bar in which the gay, cross-dresser, and trans scenes meet. Gonda is in a relationship with the madam of the bar, Leda. As the younger Eddie starts a passionate affair with Gonda, she ignites the jealousy of Leda, unaware of another kind of history between them.

Horror Vault's take

Set against the vibrant underground subcultures of 1960s Tokyo, this boundary-defying Japanese New Wave film follows Eddie, a young trans woman whose affair with a bar owner sets off a chain of events shadowed by a dark, unspoken past. Director Toshio Matsumoto weaves documentary-style interviews, fragmented chronology, and raw street energy into a portrait of desire that feels as destabilising as it is beautiful. What appears to be a love-triangle drama gradually reveals itself as something far more mythic and harrowing. The film remains one of world cinema's most daring explorations of gender, identity, and the cruelty of fate.
