The premise

A nuclear explosion in the far north unleashes Gamera, the legendary flying turtle, from his sleep under the ice. In his search for energy, Gamera wreaks havoc over the entire world, and it's up to the scientists, assisted by a young boy with a strange sympathic link to the monster, to put a stop to Gamera's rampage.

Horror Vault's take

When Cold War-era nuclear activity disturbs the Arctic permafrost, something ancient and enormous awakens beneath the ice — a colossal, fire-breathing turtle of prehistoric legend known as Gamera. As the creature's relentless hunger for energy sends it on a catastrophic path across the globe, desperate scientists race to find any means of stopping it. Standing apart from the panic is a young boy whose inexplicable bond with the beast complicates humanity's plans. This landmark tokusatsu production launched one of kaiju cinema's most enduring icons.
