The premise

Chris and his girlfriend Rose go upstate to visit her parents for the weekend. At first, Chris reads the family's overly accommodating behavior as nervous attempts to deal with their daughter's interracial relationship, but as the weekend progresses, a series of increasingly disturbing discoveries lead him to a truth that he never could have imagined.

Horror Vault's take

When photographer Chris accompanies his white girlfriend Rose to meet her family for a weekend getaway, what begins as mild social discomfort quietly curdles into something far more sinister. The Armitage household harbors secrets beneath its polished, welcoming surface — secrets with deep roots in power, control, and exploitation. Jordan Peele's feature debut weaponizes the conventions of the thriller to expose a uniquely American horror, building unbearable tension through everyday microaggressions before exploding into visceral, survival-stakes terror. Few films have so precisely captured the feeling of being the only one in the room who senses something is terribly, fundamentally wrong.
