The premise
Fifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween Night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois to kill again.
Horror Vault's take
On a quiet Halloween night in the sleepy suburb of Haddonfield, Illinois, a masked figure with a chilling history returns after fifteen years of confinement — and the local teenagers going about their evening have no idea what is hunting them. John Carpenter's landmark 1978 film practically invented the template for the modern slasher, relying on shadow, silence, and a relentless, almost inhuman presence rather than graphic gore to generate genuine terror. Jamie Lee Curtis announces herself as one of horror's great heroines, while Donald Pleasence lends the film an unsettling sense of dread as the doctor who knows exactly how dangerous his former patient truly is. Decades on, it remains a masterclass in sustained suspense.
