The premise

When a man is eaten alive by an unknown creature, the local Game Warden teams up with a paleontologist from New York to find the beast. Add to the mix an eccentric philanthropist with a penchant for "Crocs", and here we go! This quiet, remote lake is suddenly the focus of an intense search for a crocodile with a taste for live animals...and people!

Horror Vault's take

A gruesome death in a remote Maine lake draws an unlikely crew to its shores: a no-nonsense game warden, a fish-out-of-water paleontologist, and a wildly eccentric crocodile enthusiast whose motives are anyone's guess. Something massive and ancient is lurking beneath the surface, and it's already acquired a taste for anything that gets too close to the water. Lake Placid balances genuine creature-feature thrills with sharp, self-aware comedy, leaning into its B-movie DNA with infectious charm. Betty White's scene-stealing supporting turn alone makes this a cult classic worth revisiting.
