Driven by childhood trauma and a burning need for answers, a young woman pulls her closest friend into a descent that goes far beyond a simple act of revenge. Pascal Laugier's film is a landmark of New French Extremism — relentlessly punishing in its violence yet genuinely preoccupied with questions of martyrdom and what lies beyond human endurance. Few horror films commit this fully to their central idea, or exact this high a toll from the viewer.
