The premise

In a rural village in Thailand, Mak is sent to fight in a war and leaves his pregnant wife, Nak. Mak is injured and barely survives. He returns home to his doting wife and child, or so he thinks.

Horror Vault's take

Set in rural 19th-century Thailand, Nang Nak tells the heartbreaking story of a soldier who returns from war to be reunited with his beloved wife and newborn child — yet something about life in their riverside home feels deeply, disturbingly wrong. Drawing on one of Thailand's most enduring folk legends, the film wraps its supernatural dread in layers of genuine tenderness and grief. Director Nonzee Nimibutr crafts a ghost story less interested in cheap scares than in the anguish of a love that refuses to surrender to death. Lush visuals and a mournful atmosphere make this one of Southeast Asian horror cinema's most celebrated achievements.
