The premise

A farm boy reluctantly becomes a member of the undead when a girl he meets turns out to be part of a band of vampires who roam the highways in stolen cars.

Horror Vault's take

Set against the sun-scorched plains of rural America, Near Dark follows a young Oklahoma farm boy whose chance encounter with a mysterious drifter girl pulls him into a dangerous world he never asked for. A ragtag clan of ancient, ruthless wanderers travels the backroads by night, leaving chaos in their wake — and this newcomer must navigate loyalty, survival, and his own changing nature. Director Kathryn Bigelow fuses neo-noir atmosphere with visceral vampire mythology, stripping the genre of its gothic grandeur and replacing it with neon-lit roadside dread. The result is a lean, mean cult classic that feels like a Southern Gothic nightmare crossed with an outlaw Western.
