“The family that eats together stays together.”
Directed by Sion Sono
🏆 5 wins & 2 nominations total
The premise
A teenager named Noriko Shimabara runs away from her family in Toyokawa, to meet Kumiko, the leader of an Internet BBS, Haikyo.com. She becomes involved with Kumiko's family circle, which grows darker after the mass suicide of 54 high school girls.
Horror Vault's take
A restless teenage girl flees her provincial life and family to seek connection with a charismatic online community leader in Tokyo — only to find that belonging comes at a deeply disturbing price. Set against the backdrop of a shocking mass tragedy, the film unravels how identity can be stripped away and reconstructed by those who know exactly how lost you are. Director Sion Sono crafts a companion piece to his earlier Suicide Club, expanding its mythology into an intimate and deeply unsettling character study. Quiet and methodical, it rewards patient viewers willing to sit with its creeping sense of dread.
