Horror Vault's take

A covert military experiment goes catastrophically wrong when a school of genetically engineered piranhas escapes into the waterways feeding a popular summer resort. With vacationers and campers splashing blissfully nearby, a determined investigator and a local recluse race against time to warn authorities before the feeding frenzy begins. Director Joe Dante injects the creature-feature mayhem with sharp wit and knowing self-awareness, keeping the tension surprisingly effective beneath the B-movie sheen. It's a gleefully irreverent Jaws riff that earns its cult-classic status on its own bloody merits.
