When his wife abruptly abandons their marriage without explanation, a desperate husband in divided Berlin sets out to uncover the truth behind her withdrawal — hiring a private detective and conducting his own increasingly unhinged investigation. What begins as a familiar story of infidelity and domestic collapse mutates into something far more disturbing, as the husband's search reveals behaviour that defies any rational explanation. Andrzej Żuławski's infamous art-horror landmark operates simultaneously as a raw dissection of a disintegrating relationship and as a genuinely grotesque creature feature, blurring the line between psychological breakdown and supernatural nightmare. Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill deliver ferociously committed performances that remain among the most harrowing in the genre.
