The premise

When brilliant, eccentric scientist Seth Brundle makes a huge technological breakthrough in teleportation, he decides to test it on himself. Unbeknownst to him, a common housefly manages to get inside the device and the two become one.

Horror Vault's take

A visionary scientist's triumph over the limits of human travel quickly curdles into something far more disturbing when a seemingly routine self-experiment goes catastrophically wrong. Director David Cronenberg crafts a slow-burn descent that is equal parts science fiction nightmare and gut-wrenching tragedy, anchored by a chameleonic performance from Jeff Goldblum. The horror here is intimate and relentless — less about what lurks in the dark and more about watching a man dissolve from the inside out. Few genre films of its era match its ambition or its anguish.
