Schlock1973
“The first musical monster movie in years.”
Directed by John Landis
🏆 1 win & 1 nomination
The premise
A quiet suburb in Southern California is terrorized by a mysterious murderous monster living in a cave. As the bodies pile up -- with incriminating banana peels always near by the crime scene -- a group of teens stumble on the guilty party: a 20-million-year-old Schlockthropus, an ape-like creature with a sense of the absurd.
Horror Vault's take
A sleepy Southern California suburb descends into chaos when a rash of grisly murders begins drawing crowds, news crews, and confused teenagers — all courtesy of an ancient ape-like beast with an inexplicable flair for the ridiculous. Director John Landis stars under layers of Rick Baker creature makeup as the Schlockthropus, a 20-million-year-old missing link with more personality than most of his human co-stars. Equal parts loving monster-movie homage and straight-faced farce, the film revels in its own low-budget absurdity. It's the kind of creature feature where banana peels are legitimate forensic evidence.
