The premise

After a team of surgeons botches his beloved wife's operation, the distraught Dr. Phibes unleashes a score of Old-Testament atrocities on his enemies.

Horror Vault's take

A disfigured musical genius and self-styled avenger, Dr. Anton Phibes sets Scotland Yard on a desperate race against time as he dispenses elaborately theatrical punishments upon those he holds responsible for his wife's death. Drawing from the ten plagues of the Old Testament, each killing is a grotesque work of art unto itself. Vincent Price commands the screen with magnetic menace, anchoring a film that balances jet-black humor with genuine macabre flair. Lush Art Déco design and an arch, campy sensibility make this one of early-1970s horror's most distinctive and enduring confections.
