The premise

Kingdom of Hungary, 17th century. As she gets older, powerful Countess Erzsébet Báthory (1560-1614), blinded by the passion that she feels for a younger man, succumbs to the mad delusion that blood will keep her young and beautiful forever.

Horror Vault's take

Set in the blood-soaked courts of 17th-century Hungary, The Countess reimagines the legend of Erzsébet Báthory — history's most notorious female serial killer — through a lens of tragic obsession. Driven by a consuming passion for a younger man and a mounting terror of losing her youth, this formidable noblewoman spirals toward increasingly monstrous acts in pursuit of eternal beauty. Writer-director Julie Delpy crafts a psychologically rich portrait that asks how vanity and unchecked power can curdle into something truly horrifying. As much character study as period horror, the film lingers in the uncomfortable space between human frailty and pure evil.
