The Horror of Frankenstein1970
“The dead shall rise again!”
Directed by Jimmy Sangster
The premise
Brilliant but arrogant scientist Victor Frankenstein builds a man from spare body parts, only for the monster to come alive and wreak havoc.
Horror Vault's take
A wickedly irreverent spin on Mary Shelley's enduring tale, this Hammer production reimagines Victor Frankenstein as a coldly brilliant and thoroughly unlikeable anti-hero whose obsession with reanimating the dead knows no ethical bounds. Where earlier Frankenstein films leaned into tragedy, this entry laces its gothic trappings with a sharp streak of dark comedy, giving the familiar story a gleefully cynical edge. Body parts are procured by increasingly outrageous means, and the creature that eventually stalks the castle corridors is every bit as dangerous as its creator deserves.
