The premise

A trapeze artist must decide between her lust for Sergio, the Happy Clown, or her affection for Javier, the Sad Clown, both of whom are deeply disturbed.

Horror Vault's take

Set against the turbulent backdrop of mid-20th-century Spain, The Last Circus plunges viewers into the deranged world of a traveling big top where two clowns — one cheerful, one mournful — spiral into violent obsession over the same woman. Director Álex de la Iglesia crafts a fever dream of blood, spectacle, and political allegory that grows increasingly unhinged with each passing act. What begins as a darkly comic love triangle mutates into something far more savage and operatic, blurring the line between tragedy and grotesque farce. Expect clashing tones, outrageous imagery, and a film that refuses to play by any conventional rules.
