The premise
In 1993, spectators at the last screening of a horror film at a downtown cinema fall one by one into the hands of a sadistic and ruthless killer.
Horror Vault's take
Set against the flickering glow of a 1993 Uruguayan cinema on a stormy night, The Last Matinee traps an unsuspecting audience inside a movie house with something far more dangerous than what's on screen. A methodical and merciless killer stalks the darkened rows, picking off patrons one by one while the film reels keep rolling. Equal parts love letter to grindhouse cinema and unrelenting slasher exercise, it revels in its retro setting and practical nastiness. Genre fans looking for a throwback that delivers on atmosphere and bloodshed will find plenty to sink into here.
