The premise

A European prince terrorizes the local peasantry while using his castle as a refuge against the "Red Death" plague that stalks the land.

Horror Vault's take

In plague-ravaged medieval Europe, a sadistic prince retreats behind castle walls with his court of decadent nobles, convinced his allegiance to dark powers will shield him from the pestilence decimating the peasantry outside. Vincent Price commands the screen as a villain of chilling refinement, wielding cruelty and Satanic devotion with equal elegance. Roger Corman's lush adaptation of Poe's classic tale drowns every frame in rich colour and Gothic menace, building to a confrontation with death itself that no castle gate can bar.
