The premise

A young policewoman slowly goes insane while tracking down an elusive serial rapist/killer through Italy when she herself becomes a victim of the brutal man's obsession.

Horror Vault's take

In Dario Argento's visually arresting psychological thriller, a young detective pursuing a savage serial killer across Italy finds herself drawn dangerously close to her quarry — and to the edge of her own sanity. The film takes its name from a real psychological phenomenon in which overwhelming exposure to great art triggers dissociation and hallucination, weaving surreal dreamscapes into a brutal cat-and-mouse narrative. Asia Argento delivers a raw, physically committed performance as a woman whose grip on reality frays with each encounter. Equal parts giallo and character study, it is among the director's most psychologically complex late-career works.
