The premise

A pathologist experiments with a deaf-mute woman who is unable to scream to prove that humans die of fright due to an organism he names The Tingler that lives within each person on the spinal cord and is suppressed only when people scream when scared.

Horror Vault's take

In this Vincent Price-led slice of late-50s sci-fi horror, a pathologist becomes convinced that fear itself manifests as a living parasite attached to the human spine — one that only a primal scream can keep in check. His obsessive research leads him toward increasingly dangerous and unethical experiments, with a terrifying showdown that blurs the line between the laboratory and the audience. William Castle's showmanship is baked right into the film's DNA, making it as much an experience as a story. Few creature features of the era weaponize a single outrageous concept so gleefully.
