Tombs of the Blind Dead1972
“Makes "Night of the Living Dead" Look Like a Kids' Pajama Party!”
Directed by Amando de Ossorio
The premise
In 13th century Berzano, a legion of knights known as the Templar were executed for conducting black magic rituals and committing human sacrifices in a quest for eternal life. 700 years later, they rise from the dead and attack a group of vacationing college students who visit the remains of their abandoned monastery.
Horror Vault's take
In the crumbling ruins of Berzano, the rotting corpses of executed Knights Templar have slumbered for seven centuries — condemned for their bloodthirsty pursuit of immortality through dark ritual. When a group of young travellers stumbles upon the forsaken monastery, they unwittingly rouse something that should never have been disturbed. Director Amando de Ossorio conjures a uniquely haunting brand of horror, built on fog-drenched atmosphere and the slow, relentless advance of skeletal riders. This Spanish cult classic launched one of Euro-horror's most iconic undead mythologies.
