The premise

A woman who is about to die calls the town's priest and hands him a scapulary, saying that she knows of its great powers. Anybody who does not believe in them will end up dead.

Horror Vault's take

Set against the turbulent backdrop of Mexico and its revolutionary era, The Scapular weaves together interlocking stories bound by a single, seemingly ordinary religious relic. A dying woman's deathbed warning to a Catholic priest sets a chain of dark events into motion, as those who dismiss the scapulary's reputed power begin to meet grim fates. Blending surrealist imagery with Catholic mysticism, the film casts a slow, creeping dread over questions of belief and consequence. It is a rare piece of Mexican genre cinema that treats superstition and faith as forces equally capable of salvation and destruction.
