The premise
In 16th century Japan, peasants Genjuro and Tobei sell their earthenware pots to a group of soldiers in a nearby village, in defiance of a local sage's warning against seeking to profit from warfare. Genjuro's pursuit of both riches and the mysterious Lady Wakasa, as well as Tobei's desire to become a samurai, run the risk of destroying both themselves and their wives, Miyagi and Ohama.
Horror Vault's take
Set against the chaos of feudal Japan's Warring States period, Ugetsu follows two peasant men whose hunger for wealth and glory pulls them away from their devoted wives and into realms of dangerous enchantment. Director Kenji Mizoguchi weaves a ghost story of extraordinary delicacy, where the supernatural intrudes on the mundane with eerie, almost imperceptible grace. The film's mist-shrouded landscapes and fluid cinematography create a sense that the living and the dead share the same fragile world. A landmark of world cinema, it lingers long after its final image fades.
