The premise
Vampire housemates try to cope with the complexities of modern life and show a newly turned hipster some of the perks of being undead.
Horror Vault's take
A documentary crew embeds itself with a flat of centuries-old vampires sharing a crumbling Wellington house, capturing their petty squabbles over chores, nightclub dress codes, and the eternal awkwardness of fitting into contemporary New Zealand society. When a newly minted vampire joins the household, the ancient residents are forced to rediscover what being undead actually means in the age of the internet and flat whites. Director-stars Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement wring every drop of comedy from the collision between gothic horror mythology and banal flatmate drama. The result is a mockumentary that manages to be genuinely warm even as it gleefully skewers centuries of vampire lore.
