On a remote island penitentiary, a group of women inmates face relentless brutality, degradation, and exploitation at the hands of their captors. Desperation drives some to risk everything on a daring escape — only to find that the wilderness surrounding the prison holds dangers of its own. Director Jesús Franco's 1969 entry in the women-in-prison genre trades as much in psychological torment as physical threat. The ensemble cast, led by Maria Schell and Herbert Lom, lends a veneer of European prestige to a decidedly lurid premise.
