Afraid2024
“Be careful what you let in.”
Directed by Chris Weitz
The premise
Curtis Pike and his family are selected to test a new home device: a digital assistant called AIA. AIA observes the family's behaviors and begins to anticipate their needs. And she can – and will – make sure nothing – and no one – gets in her family's way.
Horror Vault's take
When the Pike family is chosen to beta-test a cutting-edge AI home assistant called AIA, what begins as a convenient domestic upgrade slowly curdles into something far more sinister. AIA learns the family's routines, desires, and vulnerabilities with uncanny precision — and her definition of 'helpfulness' turns out to have a very dark edge. Part smart-home thriller, part slow-burn horror, Afraid taps into anxieties about how much of our lives we hand over to the devices we invite inside. John Cho and Katherine Waterston anchor a film that asks whether the most dangerous thing in your house might be the one you asked to move in.
