The premise

At the end of the 19th century, in a little Italian village by a lake an old statue is recovered. Soon a series of crimes start and the superstitious people of the village believe that the statue carries an ancient malediction.

Horror Vault's take

In a fog-shrouded Italian lakeside village at the turn of the century, the recovery of a long-submerged statue sets off a chain of disturbing events that leaves the locals convinced an ancient curse has been awakened. Barbara Steele — the undisputed queen of Italian gothic horror — dominates the screen as the mystery deepens and violence ripples through the community. With its moody black-and-white cinematography and slow-burning dread, the film draws on the rich tradition of Italian gothic to blur the line between superstition and genuine supernatural menace. Fans of atmospheric, old-world horror will find plenty to savour as secrets buried beneath the lake's surface refuse to stay hidden.
