The premise
The Queen of Selvascura risks everything to be a mother; the King of Roccaforte falls in love with the voice of a mysterious girl; the King of Altomonte becomes obsessed with a flea and neglects his daughter.

Adapted from Giambattista Basile's 17th-century fairy tales, this visually opulent anthology weaves together three royal courts each consumed by their own dangerous fixations. A queen will pay an unthinkable price for the child she craves, a king becomes enchanted by a voice he cannot resist, and another monarch's absurd obsession with a creature puts his daughter's fate in peril. Matteo Garrone conjures a world where magic is beautiful and brutal in equal measure, refusing to soften the darkness at the heart of these ancient stories. This is the fairy tale as it was before the edges were sanded away.
